PSA for those who are not where they expected to be AKA Falling Off The Ladder

Just in case you’re wondering what’s going on, I’ve decided to merge FOTL back into UG. It was never meant to be a whole separate business and life has become… complicated.

3 businesses is defo too much to handle.

So all the stuff that is continuing from FOTL will now be homed here where it should be in the UnlikelyGeniuis nest.

Please bear with me whilst I move all the FOTL info over. It’s a bigger job than I thought… as usual.

Here are some quick links to help you get to the right place…

They say “everyone’s got a book in them”…

Turns out I actually HAD.

A triple award-winning one!

Crikey.

The career ladder isn’t for everyone…

Falling Off The Ladder is a mindset manual for those who don’t fit the one size fits all workplace culture, who have been pushed out or treated like they are broken, and who want to make a success of self-employment.

In this book, I (Helen Hill, owner of UnlikelyGenius™ Ltd), share the story of my squiggly career and leap from meltdown inducing employment to thriving in running my own business. I share tried and tested advice, short activities to help you master the self-employment mindset, and guide you in how to move on from the beliefs and behaviours that are holding you back to create a work-life that works for you.

Falling off the Ladder will challenge you to build your confidence, embrace the freedom and joy in finally being allowed to be yourself and be the ruler of your own empire, with no hustling, ‘preneuring or 5 am gym starts in sight.

Though there will be bunnies. Very fluffy ones.

…and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re a failure.

This is not a book about how to set up a business - there are plenty of those out there.

It is about how to change your mindset and move on from previous experiences to make the best opportunity of working for yourself.

It is about re-evaluating the beliefs you have about yourself and your work, and how to thrive in self-employment.

What readers are saying:

(more of this below)

“Equal parts memoir and manual, this book will help you unravel ingrained ideas about the world of work, so you can redefine your life and career on your terms – and get your freelance business off to a fearless start.”

— Louise Shanahan, The Copy Prescription

“Falling Off The Ladder reassured me I wasn’t alone in wanting something different from the traditional career path. It helped me examine my motivations for going freelance and refocus on the purpose of my work.”

— Kate Stacey, freelancer

It is time to stop living by other people’s rules and definitions of success.

And this book can help you do that.

To redefine what success means to you.

To help you find your people, and a happier way of working.

To finally feel like you can be yourself in your work and let your personality and skills shine.

Giving structure to your leap

The book is split into 3 parts.

Part one: Seven phases in the process of falling (or leaping) off the ladder

Part two: The emotions that are likely to appear during and after making the leap, and how to ride them

Part three: Oh boy, it's a big 'un. Here we look at moving forward, how to do it your way and thrive.

One step at a time. Together.

FOTL is an interactive book: there are activities throughout to help you take action. To help you prioritise the areas you might need to work on. To help you thrive.

And it contains not just my story but that of many other freelancers and self-employed. Learn from our experiments, wins, failures, cock-ups and varied experience.

What do I know?

It’s a fair question. One I asked myself at every moment of writing.

BUT.

I have been there.
I have been discriminated against because of an illness.
I have been bullied.
I have lived through numerous workplaces where I just didn’t fit the one-size fits all mould.
I felt a total failure.

But now I’m happy, re-motivated, thriving. I’ve even been shortlisted for 3 awards (still awaiting the outcome) and won one.
